Our mission is simple: to establish a national profile for nursing and midwifery informatics in Ireland.
We welcome new members – especially those who do not consider IT experts but who want to access a network of nurses and midwives who have an interest in informatics and the use of technology in clinical practice.
HISI NM welcomes all clinically-focused practitioners, including students. Although HISI NM is nurse-led, the group is open to all clinicians.
The HISI NM community will help you learn, acquire informatics skills, and share your experiences with other nurses and midwives working in the Irish healthcare domain.
Nursing and midwifery needs to have a strong voice in how health and technology work together.
At a national level HISI NM offer its members an opportunity to shape next generation computing and ensure that national and local IT programmes are fit for purpose and maximise patient safety.
Your clinical experience and voice needs to inform this debate. Please join us »
HISI NM is affiliated with IMIA SIGNI.
A new report by Dr. Pamela Hussey (School of Nursing and Human Sciences, DCU) and Daragh Rodger (Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Care of Older Person Community, St Mary’s Hospital) prepared for ONMSD HSE argues that dual role of nursing often under recognised.
Making visible the dual role of nurse and informatician particularly in regard to nurse to nurse communication across and between services will be challenging particularly in the early stages of design and analysis. The timing for design and analysis of care practices is imminent particularly before deployment of phase one of Electronic Health Record enters procurement stage. Thus ensuring that the often poorly noticed and unique contribution which the nursing profession provides that we know has a direct bearing on patient outcome can achieve optimal recognition and promotion.
Whilst the international nursing community contemplates if and how advocacy and compassion can be articulated in computing terms this short report offers a small and simple case example for further discussion with relevant stakeholders. You can read the full publication here
The HISINM group is now also taking part in the EU funded ENS4Care project.
ENS4Care is a Thematic Network involving 24 partners, whose main objective is the development of evidence based guidelines for the implementation of eHealth services in nursing and social care, building on existing good practices amongst the participants of the Network, sharing and transferring knowledge across European regions.
ENS4Care provides a sustainable collaboration platform for relevant health, social care and users’ stakeholders, scientific communities and pan-European industry representation. The ENS4Care questionnaire to collect the practices has now been launched.
Please find access to the survey here.
The deadline to submit the practices has been extended until 14 March 2014.
The Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly TD, today (13th December) published the eHealth Strategy for Ireland, the Health Identifiers Bill 2013 and announced the recruitment of a Chief Information Officer for the health services.
“The eHealth Strategy will put Ireland in a position to fully exploit all of the many benefits which today’s information and communication technology has to offer in modernising the way we treat patients and particularly in providing care in the most appropriate setting and at the most appropriate level within the health services” said Minister Reilly. “From my perspective, the eHealth strategy could not have come at a better time because eHealth is a key enabler of change, the type of radical reform that we have put in train for our health services. I am also pleased by the proposals for cooperation with Northern Ireland in this area”.
The Health Identifiers Bill 2013, published today, provides the legal basis for Individual Health Identifiers for health service users and unique identifiers for health service providers. The identifiers will be used across the health service, both public and private.
The Health Informatics Training System (HITS) is a training and certification solution for all healthcare workers.
HITS is a response to the needs of healthcare employees who require a clear understanding of the technologies used in this sector and their contribution to administrative and clinical best practice.
HITS was developed by ICS Skills in partnership with the Health Informatics Society of Ireland and has received Category 1 Approval from An Bord Altranais.
